Flood defences and Flood Barriers

Extreme rain fall and adverse weather is now common place creating regular flash flooding in many low lying areas and flood plains. The Environment Agency is now building flood defences in many parts of the UK to combat these effects , Defence Doors Ltd are supplying these Environment Agency schemes with custom built steel floodgates built into these flood defence walls form permanent flood protection

Flood gates do have a visual impact and design considerations are given to minimize this impact. We offer a range of alternative finishes to the floodgate surface with various options of timber cladding, stainless steel engravings or architectural sculptures mounted on the floodgate leaves to reduce this impact by making the flood gate a focal point

Sea Defences and Storm Gates

Defence Doors Ltd has both standard and bespoke steel floodgate designs that have been approved and used for Environment Agencies and local authority flood alleviations schemes across the country.

With predicted sea level rises flood gates and storm gates are now being built into the new sea defences all along the UK coast line incorporating a range of watertight doors and gates.

These storm gates are either cast directly into structural wave walls or manufactured as a free standing structure between existing walls. Debris thrown up by heavy seas impose structural loading on the flood gates in storm conditions, the gates are designed to withstand these impact loads whilst protecting coastal towns from tidal surges.

Operation and maintenance

The floodgates are a hinged assembly designed to operation by a single person using minimum effort in normal weather conditions with a latching system that takes no more than 30 seconds to lock form the fully open position.

The hinges are manufactured from mild steel and supplied with stainless steel hinge pins and grease points, these hinges are fully bearing assemblies but for coastal applications the thrust races are replaced with thrust washers manufactured from marine bronze.

The gates are supplied as standard with a 400 micron multi coat epoxy paint system for durability and minimum maintenance. Coastal protection requires additional abrasion resistance with optional glass flake coatings supplied as required. All gates are available in any RAL or BS color.

Flood barriers and stop logs

An alternative flood defence solution to permanent steel flood gates are demountable stop logs. Defence Doors Ltd offer a light weight flood protection system manufactured in UPVC that is strong, and rapidly deployed, unobtrusive and non corrosive. This flood defence system carries a BS kite mark PAS 1188-1, it is a patented design and has been tested to water pressure of 3.4 tonnes and to flood height of 1100mm.

These flood barriers are operated with quick action clips for rapid deployment and positioned with on seat water pressure. These flood defences are used to protect doors, windows, garage and patio doors and drive way entrances.

The PVC seals and all other components are resistant to salt water, effluent and other pollutants ensuring a guaranteed water tight barrier each time they are deployed and a long service life The silicone sponge gasket ensures the stop log maintains its watertight integrity on almost any surface, has an excellent recovery rate and is UV stable.

Storage is generally an issue with demountable flood defence barriers, as these panels are manufactured from UPVC and so they are very light weight allowing the stop log panels to be hung on garage walls or lifted into loft spaces with ease.

The stop log frame assembly is carefully positioned to minimise visual appearance, it is permanently fixed and rebated onto the floor to remove trip hazards. The stop log panels are as standard manufactures 200mm deep and stack in multiples upto you required flood defence level, this also allows you to increase or decrease the level of flood protection in seconds as water levels rise and fall.

Single stop logs are available up to a width of 2.5mtrs, after this width the flood barrier requires removable posts at 2.5mtr maximum increments. Water tight air brick covers are also available to protect your property from the ingress of flood water through these openings.
